During the 2020 global pandemic situation, an online Seed Portal (iiwbrseed.in) was developed by ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal to provide seeds of wheat & barley varieties to farmers.The seed portal was designed and executed through the IIWBR website in September 2020. The interested farmers had to submit basic information for registration. The farmers are grouped state-wise and district-wise. The registered farmers are informed at least one week in advance about the date and time of seed collection through bulk SMS to facilitate hassle-free seed distribution.

On average, daily 3000 farmers collect seeds as per the schedule. All the payments are made in digital modes.ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal generally opens the Farmer Seed Portal (iiwbrseed.in) in the last week of September till the availability (5-10 days) of seed every year.
During 2022-23, a total of 20,054 farmers were registered from 11 states (Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan) within four days. An amount of Rs. 1.20 crores was generated by selling more than 2,000 quintals of the seed of IIWBR varieties to the farmers during October 2023.

Dr Gyendera Singh, Director, ICAR-IIWBR, received these from Union Minister Parshottam Rupala. On the occasion, the IWBR seed portal was also launched by ICAR Director-General Dr Himanshu Pathak.
“It is a proud moment for all the scientists and members of the institute. The DBW-327 is a high-yielding and climate-resilient variety. It has a potential of yielding up to 80 quintal per hectare,” he said.
