On the occasion of Pongal, 2.20 crore family cardholders across Tamil Nadu will receive a Pongal gift package from ration shops. The package comprises one kilogram of brown rice, one kilogram of sugar, and a whole sugarcane.Tokens for the Pongal gift packages have been distributed door-to-door. This allows 100 people to collect their items in the morning and another 100 in the afternoon January 9 onwards.
Pongal Gift in Ration Shop 2025
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will kick off the distribution of Pongal gift packages today at a ration shop in Saidapet, Chennai, near Chinnamalai. This annual initiative, aimed at celebrating the harvest festival, seeks to provide essential items to ration card holders across the state.
The 2024 Pongal gift package includes 1 kg of brown rice, 1 kg of sugar, and a whole sugarcane. However, unlike previous years, the package does not feature a cash component or items like cashews, dal, and raisins. free dhotis and sarees will be distributed as part of this scheme.
According to Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, the exclusion of cash is attributed to the financial constraints caused by recent heavy rains and floods in the state. Last year, the government had given Rs 1000 cash gift.
Financial Allocation and Beneficiaries
This year, the DMK government has allocated Rs 249.76 crore for this program. Families residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps will also receive the gift package. This program is expected to benefit 2,20,94,585 rice ration cardholders.
The state government has reportedly issued tokens to 95% of ration cardholders, specifying the date and time for collecting their packages. Recipients can visit their designated ration shops between January 9 and January 13 to claim the gift sets.
Following CM Stalin’s launch, ministers, MPs, and MLAs will oversee the distribution of Pongal gift packages in their respective districts.

Eligibility and Exclusions
