Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah on Tuesday unveiled the “CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal,” which aims to repay the deposits of thousands of people in four cooperative societies owned by the Sahara Group.Shah assured the depositors that no one can stop their money now and that they will get the refund in 45 days after registering on the portal.
The Supreme Court, in an order dated March 29, 2023, directed that Rs. 5000 Crores be transferred from the “Sahara-SEBI Refund Account” to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS) for disbursement against the legitimate dues of genuine depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies.
Earlier in a statement dated July 17, the Ministry of Cooperation said, “To address the grievances of genuine members/depositors of Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies for payment of their legitimate deposits, the Ministry of Cooperation had filed an application in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. The Hon’ble Supreme Court vide its order dated 29th March, 2023 had directed that Rs. 5000 Crores be transferred out of the ‘Sahara-SEBI Refund Account’, to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS) for disbursement against the legitimate dues of the genuine depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies.

Union Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, launched the transfer of funds to the genuine depositors of four cooperatives of Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies through CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal on Friday. In the first leg of transfers, 112 small investors will receive the first tranche of Rs 10,000 each. The minister informed that so far 18 lakh depositors have registered on the CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal, which had been launched on July 18.
However, he assured that all Sahara investors will receive their money back. “I want to assure and I am fully confident that all depositors will get their funds in the coming days,” he said, congratulating the depositors.He further informed that it is responsibility of the government to ensure that investors’ money is safe and returned to them.
The minister also said that the money of Sahara depositors had been stuck for the last 12 to 15 years due to the management’s fault and delay in court litigations.Highlighting the efforts made by Ministry of Cooperation to secure Rs 5,000 crore from the Sebi-Sahara Fund, Shah said the ministry took an initiative of bringing all government bodies concerned, including CBI and Income Tax department on this issue and made a common appeal before the Supreme Court that small investors should get the first right over the funds.

What is needed to get refund process to claim?
To register in the portal, you need Aadhaar linked mobile number, Aadhaar linked bank account. Other documents including your deposit number and details of your investment. If your claim deposit is above Rs 50,000, you will have to submit PAN.
According to the website, with help of refund website you can log in on this web portal and submit all your claims simultaneously and upload the relevant documents to support your claim and share proof of invested amount.
What details does a Depositor need to provide with the Claim Request form/ Application?
The Depositor should have:
a. Membership no.
b. Deposit Account no.
c. Aadhaar linked Mobile no. (Mandatory)
d. Deposit certificates/ Passbook
e. PAN card (if claim amount is Rs. 50,000/- and above) (Mandatory).
When will Sahara investors get the refund?
Shah stated that the claimants’ bank accounts will get the money within 45 days.
Once investors submit the application, Sahara group committee will verify the details within 30 days. In the next 15 days, or within 45 days of application, investors will be informed through SMS or website.
The refund of claimed amount will be directly credited to Depositor’s Aadhaar seeded bank account only after 45 days from the date of successful claim submission.

No, without Aadhaar seeded bank account Depositor cannot file a Claim. The Aadhaar seeding shall facilitate secure fund transfer to the genuine Depositor’s Bank account.
