What is Haj?
Haj, an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the fifth pillar of Islam. Muslims (who are physically and financially strong) perform Haj between the eighth and 13th days of Dhul-Hijjah month (the 12th month of the Islamic calendar year).Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah on Thursday announced the opening of registrations for the Hajj 2023 season for Muslims in the Kingdom.
The ministry said there will be four categories of packages available for pilgrims. The economic package starts at SR3,984 riyals (Dh3,892), and pilgrims can choose to make the total payment in one go or opt for three installments, according to a statement by Saudi Press Agency.
Saudi government distributes pilgrims’ quota based on the population of Muslims in the respective countries. Saudi Aarabia is however not yet declared the Hajj quota for the year 2023 (1444 H).More than 2.5 million pilgrims perform Hajj in normal days. However, the Kingdom curtailed the number of pilgrims in 2020, 2021, and also in 2022 owing to the health concern and the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Talking about a good news for pilgims looking forward to Hajj this year, Bakhala said, “We have made many people perform Hajj for the last 34 years and this year the central government has taken a big decision. According to the Haj Policy 2023, this year everyone can apply for free.” Notably, a fee of Rs 400 was earlier charged for each application.In the last two years, restrictions were imposed on Haj pilgrimage in view of the outbreak of Corona. Under the new Hajj policy, this year priority will be given to the elderly, disabled and women. Any woman above 45 years of age can now apply for Hajj pilgrimage alone. This year, over 1,75,000 people from all over the country will be able to perform Hajj.
Out of these, 80 percent pilgrims will go on pilgrimage on behalf of the Haj Committee. While 20 percent Haj pilgrims can go for Hajj through private tour operators. At the same time, the Central Government has canceled the VIP quota this year and VIP citizens will also have to travel like ordinary pilgrims.

More than 2.5 million Muslims from all across the world perform Haj in normal days. This includes a quota of about 02 lakh pilgrims from India.Hajj is performed every year in the last month of Islamic Calendar Dhul Hijjah.
The final date of Hajj 2023 will be decided after sighting of the new moon. However, as per the astronomical calculation, Day of Arafah or Youm ul Hajj or Hajj Day, observed on 9th of Dhul Hijjah, will most likely be on Tuesday June 27, 2023.
Haj Embarkation Points
India had earlier decided to cut the cost of Hajj 2023 by at least Rs.100,000, and also decided to increase the Haj Embarkation Points so that pilgrims can embark to Saudi Arabia from the nearest airport.In addition, the ministry said that women’s Mahram will no longer be needed and the minimum age for the online application has been set to 12 years.
