Previously, all the old ration cards for PDS are replaced with Smart Ration Cards by the TN state government. This online system of modification in the name, age, address, addition / deletion of new members have resulted in the ease of availing ration from the PDS System.

A ration card is a document through which citizens can get a ration at a subsidized price from a fair-price shop. The government of Tamil Nadu has launched a TNPDS smart ration card for the citizens of Tamil Nadu. Now Citizens are not required to carry ration cards in physical form as these cards will be available in digital form. The availability of smart ration cards will prevent fraudulent practices and cut down printing and distribution costs of ration cards. The distribution of ration cards will also become less time-consuming.

There are around 5, 80,298 ration card holders in Tamil Nadu. The Ration cardholders have requested the Government of Tamil Nadu to convert their sugar-option family cards into rice-option cards. The Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to grant this request to people and convert sugar-opted family cards into rice-opted ration cards. So all those citizens of Tamil Nadu who have previously opted for sugar can now opt for rice.

There are four types of digital ration cards available for residents of Tamilnadu State. The list of different types of ration cards is given below:-

  • Light Green cards are issued for rice and other commodities from the Fair Price Shops (FPS).
  • White cards are issued for extra 3kg of sugar over the prescribed quota.
  • No commodity card is issued to the people who are not entitled to draw any commodity from ration shops
  • Khaki cards are issued to police personnel up to the rank of inspectors.

There are 34,773 fair price shops and 2.09crore family cards in Tamil Nadu with more than 6.75crore beneficiaries. In Tamil Nadu, all ration cards were converted to digital smart cards in 2017. In the state, biometric authentication of electronic point of sale- ePOS devices have already been operationalised .

Since the DMK returned to power last year, 10,92,064 lakh new ration cards have been issued, according to a policy note on the Food and Consumer Protection Department filed on Friday by Food and Civil Supplies Minister R. Sakkarapani.The State has a total of 2,21,31,032 smart family cards, as on March 21, 2022, according to the policy note for 2022-23.

To ensure only the rightful beneficiaries avail assistance, the civil supplies and consumer protection department recently moved 2.5 lakh families holding Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration cards — earmarked for the extremely poor — to the Non-Priority Households (NPHH) category.

AAY cardholders are covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and are eligible to get 35 kg of rice or 25 kg of rice and 10 kg of wheat free of cost. They also get sugar at Rs 13.50 per kg, while other ration cardholders get it for Rs 25 per kg. However, NPHH cardholders are not eligible for subsidised foodgrains under NFSA.

V Rajaraman, commissioner, civil supplies and consumer protection, said field verification revealed that 2.5 lakh AAY cardholders didn’t meet the government-prescribed eligibility criteria. “They have been replaced with eligible families. The total number of AAY cards is 18.64 lakh and will remain unchanged,” he said.

AAY cards are issued to families with an annual income of up to Rs 15,000, pensioners, the disabled, destitute widows, slum dwellers, daily-wage workers, street vendors, household helps, and construction workers.

As of November, the state has 2.2 crore ration cards, of which 1.09 crore are NPHH cards.About 3.64 crore poor people are covered under NFSA and were issued AAY (18.64 lakh) and Priority Households (PHH) (96.21 lakh) ration cards. The population under NFSA was decided based on 2011 census data.
