Today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the 113th birthday of famous Indian poet Balamani Amma, known as the grandmother of Malayalam literature. Born in Kerala’s Thrissur district, Balamani Amma was the recipient of numerous awards for her literary work, including Saraswati Samman and Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. Balamani Amma was also the mother of Kamala Das, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature in 1984.

She never received any formal education and was homeschooled by her uncle Nalappat Narayana Menon, who was also a popular Malayali poet. Amma grew up studying his impressive collection of books and works. At the age of 19, she married V.M. Nair, the managing director and managing editor of the Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi.

One of the triumvirate poets of modern Malayalam, Vallathol Narayana Menon, had a great influence on her works along with Nalapat Narayana Menon. Balamani Amma wrote an elegy for Nalapat Narayana Menon titled ‘Lokantharangalil.’

She has also been an inspiration to later generations of Malayalam poets. She had a great influence on Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri.

Balamani Amma was an avid reader of Indian mythology and her poetry touched on the traditional understanding of women characters.

In her early days, her poetry glorified motherhood which earned her the title of the ‘poetess of motherhood’. She drew ideas from mythological characters. However, she depicted women as powerful figures who chose to remain as ordinary human beings.

She received numerous awards for her literary work, including Saraswati Samman and India’s second-highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan, the Google Doodle page said. The Kochi International Book Fair has an award dedicated to her — the Balamani Amma Award – which gives away a cash prize to writers.

Her first poem, titled Kooppukai, was published in 1930.

Amma has in turn served as an inspiration to later generations of Malayalam poets, a prominent example being Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri. The Kochi International Book Fair gives a cash prize for writers in her name, the Balamani Amma Award.

Her daughter, Kamala Das, would go on to become a celebrated author as well. Das’ autobiography Ente Katha (My Story) is one of the most popular and well-regarded works in 20th century Indian literature.

She received recognition as a gifted poet from the former ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin, Parikshith Thampuran, who awarded her with the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram.

Amma’s early poems glorified motherhood in a new light by adopting the ideas and stories of mythological characters and depicting women as powerful figures. She came to be known as the “poetess of motherhood”. Her most famous works include Amma (1934), Muthassi (1962) and Mazhuvinte Katha (1966).
