The British-era garden, which will be thrown open to the public from January 31st, will be inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu who also gave consent for its new name which invokes the celebrations connected to India’s 75 years’ of Independence.

Rashtrapati Bhavan is home to the iconic Mughal Gardens which has now been renamed Amrit Udyan to mark 75 years of India’s independence. In keeping with the theme of the year-long celebrations – Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav – the garden too has been given a new identity with ‘Amrit Udyan’. The new name is a departure from the earlier one that was connected to one of India’a longest ruling dynasties.

Mughal gardens were named so because they followed the Mughal style of garden layout. It was reportedly designed by British architect Sir Edward Lutyens at the bidding of Lady Hardinge (the wife of the then Viceroy).
