T-Mobile is turning the Golden State magenta. T-Mobile announced it has expanded the footprint of its 5G Home Internet across California, where more than 1.3 million households still have no access to home broadband. With this latest expansion across more than 30 cities and towns, T-Mobile Home Internet is now available to over six million homes throughout the state.

In 2022, many families still lack access to fast, reliable home broadband and California is no exception. In about half of California’s counties – 30 of 58 – broadband access is available to at least 94% of residents, according to a Federal Communications Commission study. Yet in these 30 counties, only 46% of households actually have high-speed internet. And in the Los Angeles area alone, it’s estimated that about 20% of students – 90,000 children – either still lack broadband service or don’t have enough bandwidth to meet academic needs

How does T-Mobile protect children’s data?

  • We inform parents about the collection and use of children’s data. You can check that out in the T-Mobile Privacy Notice.
  • We are piloting the ability for parents to designate a kid’s line and obtain the parent’s consent to collect and use data from their child.
  • We require consent for each child and each service. Which means parents may have to provide multiple consents.
Example: Sarah has 2 daughters, Lily and Rose, each with their own phone line.  Sarah will need to provide a total of 2 consents: 1. Lily’s phone line, and 2. Rose’s phone line.
  • If a parent does not consent to the collection of data, T-Mobile may not be able to provide the service.
  • The main reason we collect children’s data is to provide the product or service that collected the data.
  • It’s also important to know:
    • We do not use children’s data for marketing or advertising.
    • We do not sell children’s data.
    • We protect children’s data with security safeguards.
    • We provide parents the right to access and delete their children’s information.
  • Once a child turns 16, they will continue to receive the same services, but the extra limitations on marketing and data use that we automatically apply to their line as a kid’s line will go away. This means we may use their data for personalization or advertising. All customers can set their personal data settings in the T-Mobile Privacy Center

Manage a child’s data

Manage your settings at the line level to let us know which lines are being used by children. The management of this setting must be done through the T-Mobile App or T-Mobile.com by the Primary Account Holder (PAH) or with Full access.

Currently this setting is available to Magenta Postpaid voice lines. Mobile Internet lines may be able to make this designation in the future.
