Caio Benicio was on his bike yesterday afternoon on Parnell Street when he saw a man with a knife attacking a young girl on Parnell Square East. The 43-year-old Brazilian dismounted his bike, took off his helmet, and hit the attacker with it.

Speaking to TheJournal, Benicio he “didn’t even make a decision, it was pure instinct, and it was all over in seconds”.Four people were injured in the stabbing, including three young children. A five-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in hospital. A woman in her 30s, who is the children’s carer, also remains in a serious condition in the Mater Hospital. 

A six-year-old girl is still receiving treatment for less serious injuries and a five-year-old boy was discharged hospital yesterday. A man in his 50s, who is alleged to have carried out the attacks, also remains in a serious condition in a hospital in the Dublin Region.

A fundraiser for the hero Deliveroo driver who stopped Thursday afternoon’s stabbing attack in Parnell Square by striking the assailant with his motorcycle helmet has raised more than €310,000, with almost 30,000 people donating money.Three children and a creche worker were stabbed in an attack outside a school on Thursday, but the horrific incident could have been much worse only for the brave intervention of Caio Benicio.

The 43-year-old Deliveroo driver threw his motorbike to the ground and took down the assailant as he stabbed a five-year-old girl by striking him with his helmet.Caio has been in Ireland for one year, having moved over after his restaurant in Brazil burnt down. The rest of his family have yet to come and join him in Ireland.

A GoFundMe was launched yesterday, with organisers asking people to donate the price of a pint of Guinness in their local so the brave driver knows the people of Dublin appreciate him.A post on GoFundMe reads: “Deliveroo driver Caio Benicio was on his motorbike when he saw a man with a knife attacking a young girl on Parnell Square East. Ciao got off his bike, took off his helmet, and hit the attacker with it.

“The man’s a hero and the least we can do is buy him a pint so I’m asking you to donate the price of a pint of Guinness in your local to Caio so that he knows the people of Dublin appreciate him.”The fundraiser has really taken off, with more than 29,600 people giving money as of Saturday morning, and a whopping €313,500 raised so far, in a massive demonstration of what the brave Brazilian’s intervention meant to the people of the country.

The organiser added in the post that GoFundMe has managed to get in touch with Caio and are making him a beneficiary of this campaign so all of the money will be transferred directly to him and thanked everyone for their support.
