The minister informed that his samples have been collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. She said the monkeypox disease could be confirmed only after getting the test results.

In a new development, India’s first monkeypox case has been reported from Kerala. The patient travelled from UAE and reached the state on 12 July. Kerala Health Minister Veena George noted that “All the steps are being taken as per the guidelines issued by WHO and ICMR”.

What is monkeypox disease?
Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 in monkeys kept for research. The first human case of monkeypox was reported in 1970 and the disease occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa.Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox. The virus belongs to the family Poxviridae, which also includes the viruses causing smallpox and cowpox disease
The virus causes fever symptoms besides distinctive bumpy rashes. That is usually manageable, though one of two strains is more dangerous. The Congo strain causes death in up to 10 per cent of the patients. The West African strain is milder, with a fatality rate of around 1 per cent.
