What is Electric Vehicle Charging Station ?

First of all, let us clarify the services provided by an EV charge station. You must have seen electric two-wheelers, cars and e-rickshaws running on the streets of the city. But from where do these vehicles charge themselves? Some people charge their e-vehicles at home. Like the Tata Nexon EV, the company itself sets up the charging set-up at home at no extra charge. But not all establishments have a dedicated charging point at the parking lot with necessary safety features.Multiple charging stations are required to provide on-road charging services.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station Franchise/ Dealership-Cost

The cost of starting an EV charging station is very less as compared to other business setup. The Government of India has announced that no license is required to setup an EV charging infrastructure, provided it complies with the standards set by the ‘Ministry of Power’. Thus, no separate license is required for transmission, distribution or trading of electricity for the purpose of charging electric vehicles’ batteries.

The cost of starting EV charge stations includes only the setup cost, which includes the cost of charger, power, software, infrastructure, advertising, manpower and maintenance. On an average, the cost of setup an EV charging point ranges between Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 45,00,000 and includes the cost of new power connections, civil works, technicians and staff, maintenance, advertising, promotion, EVSE management software and integration, and land leasing (if any), depending on the type of charger you plan to install.

Types of Electric Vehicle Charging Station

There are three types of EV chargers:

  • Type 1 – This is a single phase plug which can charge the vehicle at power level up to 3 kW. It slowly converts the AC power from a home charging point to DC in the vehicle.
  • Type 2 – This is a three-phase plug capable of handling power levels between 7.4 kW and 43 kW with a 400 volt AC power supply. This type of charger is compatible with both AC and DC charging systems as well as vehicles with CCS plugs.
  • Combined Charging System (CCS) – As the name suggests, these charges are capable of handling Type 1 AC charging as well as Type 2 DC fast charging. Combo charges can handle power inputs up to 350 kW.
  • Chademo Charger – This is a fast charger with a power input of 400 kW, 1000 V, 400 A direct current. Chademo is an acronym for ‘Charge’ and is widely accepted by over 70 countries across the region.
  • GB/T Charger – This type of charger is recommended by the Government of India. The Bharat DC 001 standard offers a power output of 15 kW / 72-200 V while the Bharat AC 001 offers an output of 10 kW / 230 V.

Although the customer segment still depends on the traditional auto industry and the EV automobile industry is the priority of the next generation. The government has also taken several initiatives to promote the sale of such vehicles. The GST on electric vehicles and their batteries has been reduced to 5%. Due to this, income tax benefits are also provided.

The rate of interest paid on their loans is Rs 1,50,000. In addition, state governments provide additional benefits, such as exemption from road tax, registration fee, stamp duty, electricity tax, etc. It is undeniably understandable that the increase in sales of such vehicles will lead to demand for charging higher numbers.

The government has issued infrastructure guidelines making it mandatory to set up EV charging stations every 3 km in cities and 25 km on national highways on both sides. It has also been clarified that there should be stations for long distance and heavy vehicles every 100 km on both sides of the highway roads.

But practically, our infrastructure does not have even 1% of the required stations. Also, the Government of India has invited bids from companies as it plans to set up more than 1000 EV charging stations by the year 2023. So, if you are a visionary entrepreneur with enough investment and patience, EV charging stations are a good Business.
